CheFive years ago, NBC4 meteorologist Ben Gelber started the process of putting together an ensemble to perform folk and traditional Jewish music for seniors and memory care residents as a part of community outreach program, which has since expanded to include synagogues, libraries, cultural events and academic settings such as Ohio State.
Ben Gelber’s "Friday Night Live Music” ensemble is a Columbus community based musicians from temples, churches and the academic community, performing a unique collection of historical melodies that we hope will touch the hearts and souls of all, and embody traditional Hebrew, liturgical, folk and Yiddish/klezmer tunes and styles.
Our desire is for the preservation and presentation of Jewish music. Our performance of approximately 75 minutes combines not only the melodies, but also commentary and stories, which allows the audience to participate in the program, with a collective appreciation of the nuances of the songs and deeper cultural feelings conveyed in the music. There is a genuine joy and celebration that the ensemble feels and shares with the audience when performing these intrinsically beautiful melodies.
